Your AI agent writes the code. Regresco keeps it tested.
Regresco MCP is in early access. Accounts are enabled one by one. Request early access; this guide describes how it works once your account is enabled.
Overview
Regresco runs a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://regresco.com/mcp. An MCP-compatible coding assistant connects to it with your permission and works with your Regresco account: it lists projects, saves regression flows, starts cloud runs and reads the results.
Coding assistants are good at changing code, but their browser checks usually end with the session. Regresco keeps the checks. A flow your assistant saves stays in your project and can run again after every change: when the assistant asks for it, from the dashboard, on a schedule or from your CI/CD pipeline. Nothing runs on its own until one of these triggers starts it.
Two parts of Regresco are involved, and it helps to keep them apart:
The MCP server is part of the Regresco web app. It checks the credential and its permissions, reads and changes your projects and flows, queues runs and returns results.
The cloud workers are separate machines that take queued runs, drive real Chromium with Playwright against your staging URL, and store results and screenshots. Your assistant never runs the browser itself.
Prerequisites
A Regresco account (start free) with MCP early access enabled.
An MCP client that supports remote servers over Streamable HTTP and either a custom Authorization header (personal token) or MCP OAuth sign-in.
A personal MCP token from Settings, Integrations, MCP, with the permissions the client needs.
A staging or preview URL reachable from the internet. Localhost and private networks are blocked.
A dedicated test account for flows that sign in. Never use production credentials.
Room in your plan. MCP needs no particular plan; your plan's project limit and monthly runs apply, exactly as in the dashboard (see Limits).
An assistant only ever sees the projects of the account whose credential it uses.
Quick start
1
Connect your assistant
Create a token in Settings, Integrations, MCP and add Regresco to your client (below).
2
Verify the tools
Ask: "List my Regresco projects." The assistant calls list_projects.
3
Create a project
"Create a Regresco project for https://staging.example.com." (create_project)
4
Save a flow
"Add a login regression flow: open /login, fill the email and password fields, submit, check the dashboard heading." (create_flow)
5
Run it in the cloud
"Run the login flow." (run_tests, then get_run until it finishes)
6
Review the result
"Show what failed." (get_run_failures, get_run_artifacts)
Connect Claude Code
Verified: connected to the Regresco production server with a personal token (Claude Code 2.1.289, October 2026): all tools discovered, a flow created and a cloud run completed.
Claude Code connects over Streamable HTTP and sends a personal MCP token in the Authorization header. The token stays in the REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN environment variable, so it never appears in a command, your shell history or Claude Code's configuration. A token with the three optional permissions (create and edit projects, create and edit test flows, start test runs) lets the assistant do everything on this page; leave out what you do not want it to do.
1. Put the token in your environment
On macOS or Linux (bash or zsh), paste the token at the prompt and press Enter; it is not shown while you type. The variable lasts for this terminal session, so start Claude Code from the same terminal. Writing the token into a shell profile keeps it in plain text; a password manager or keychain is the safer place to load it from.
On Windows PowerShell, this saves it for your user account. Open a new terminal afterwards; a terminal or editor that was already open keeps its old environment.
The command contains the text ${REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN}, not the token. The single quotes stop your shell from replacing it; Claude Code saves the text as it is and substitutes the variable each time it connects. This is the difference between shell interpolation (which would write the token into the configuration) and Claude Code's own interpolation.
macOS and Linux: add Regresco
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user regresco https://regresco.com/mcp \
--header 'Authorization: Bearer ${REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN}'
Windows PowerShell: add Regresco
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user regresco https://regresco.com/mcp --header 'Authorization: Bearer ${REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN}'
--scope user makes Regresco available in all your projects. To share the setup with a team without sharing a token, commit a .mcp.json instead; every developer keeps their own token in their environment:
claude mcp list should show regresco: https://regresco.com/mcp (HTTP) - ✔ Connected, and claude mcp get regresco shows the header as Bearer ${REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN}, never the token. In a session, /mcp lists the Regresco tools. Then ask Claude Code to list your Regresco projects.
4. Revoke access
Revoke the token in Settings, Integrations, MCP; it stops working on its next request. Then remove the server and the variable:
On macOS or Linux, close the terminal (or run unset REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN) and remove the token from any profile file where you stored it.
Claude Code can also sign in with OAuth instead of a token: add the server without --header, run /mcp, choose Authenticate, sign in to Regresco and approve the permissions.
Connect Cursor
Not yet verified: this configuration follows Cursor's documentation and has not been tested end to end with Regresco yet.
Add Regresco to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json in a repository. Cursor replaces ${env:REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN} with the variable from the environment it was started in, so set the variable as for Claude Code and restart Cursor:
In Cursor, open Customize in the sidebar and check that Regresco is switched on and lists its tools. Connection errors appear in the Output panel under MCP Logs. The Cursor CLI reads the same file; agent mcp list shows the server there. Then ask the agent to list your Regresco projects.
Connect Codex
Not yet verified: this configuration follows the Codex documentation and has not been tested end to end with Regresco yet.
The Codex CLI, the Codex IDE extension and Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app share one configuration file, ~/.codex/config.toml. Codex sends the token from the environment variable you name, so the file never holds the token:
Start Codex from a terminal where REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN is set, then run /mcp to see the server and its tools, or codex mcp list outside a session. Codex cloud tasks and ChatGPT on the web do not read this local file; using Regresco from Codex cloud tasks is not documented by OpenAI and not tested.
Connect ChatGPT
Verified: connected to the Regresco production server with OAuth from a ChatGPT Plus account on the web (October 2026): projects, runs and run results read through Regresco's tools. Write actions from ChatGPT have not been tested yet.
ChatGPT connects to Regresco as a custom MCP server and signs in with OAuth. Personal tokens cannot be used in ChatGPT.
In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
Name it Regresco, enter https://regresco.com/mcp and choose OAuth as the authentication.
Accept the warning and create the plugin.
Sign in to Regresco when asked, choose the permissions on the consent screen and select Allow access.
In a new chat, type @ and pick Regresco.
OpenAI decides which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server and whether write actions such as saving flows and starting runs are allowed, and those rules change. OpenAI's help center lists full MCP support for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces; the connection above was made on a Plus plan.
Connecting a custom MCP server yourself is different from installing a published plugin. Regresco is not listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory.
Other MCP clients
Endpoint: https://regresco.com/mcp
Transport: Streamable HTTP, stateless (POST only; GET and DELETE return 405).
Token auth: Authorization: Bearer <MCP token>
OAuth: discovered from the 401 challenge, which points to the protected resource metadata at /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp.
MCP tools
Fifteen tools in three groups. None of them deletes anything. Every tool returns structured JSON (structuredContent) and the same JSON as text. Errors come back as tool errors with a readable message and a code in brackets, for example [RUN_LIMIT_REACHED]. The reference below is generated from the server's own tool list, and the examples are real calls against a test account.
List the Regresco projects of the connected account. A project is one web app under test: a staging URL plus its saved regression flows and run history. Start here to find the project ID that other tools need.
Permission: projects:read
Input
Type
Description
limit?
integer
Optional. Maximum projects to return (1-100) Default 25.
cursor?
string
Optional. nextCursor from a previous call, to get the next page
Get one project with its saved flows (names and step counts) and its three most recent runs. Use it to check what regression coverage already exists before creating new flows.
Permission: projects:read
Input
Type
Description
projectId
string
Required. Project ID, as returned by Regresco tools
Errors
Project not found (unknown ID or another account's project)
Create a Regresco project for a web app's staging or preview URL. The URL must be public http(s) and is checked for reachability; private network and cloud metadata addresses are refused. Uses one project from the account's plan limit. Ask the user for the URL instead of guessing it, and reuse an existing project (list_projects) when one already covers the app.
Permission: projects:write
Input
Type
Description
name
string
Required. Project name, usually the app's name
stagingUrl
string
Required. Public base URL of the staging or preview environment, e.g. https://staging.example.com
Errors
URL blocked: private network, localhost or cloud metadata address
This URL could not be resolved / Could not reach this URL
Changes or replaces saved data, contacts your staging site
Rename a project or change its staging URL. A new staging URL gets the same safety and reachability checks as on creation; existing flows are kept, but their navigate and API steps still use the URLs saved in each step.
Permission: projects:write
Input
Type
Description
projectId
string
Required. Project ID, as returned by Regresco tools
List the saved regression flows of a project with their step counts. A flow is a persistent, ordered list of browser or API steps that Regresco can run in the cloud at any time, on a schedule, or from CI.
Permission: flows:read
Input

create_flow
Adds data
Save a new persistent regression flow with all of its steps in one call (up to 100 steps, run in array order). Steps are validated before anything is saved; navigate and api URLs must be public. Only use selectors and test data the user gave you or that you read from the real page; never invent credentials. Check list_flows first so you don't duplicate existing coverage. The flow stays in Regresco for scheduled and CI runs after this session.

Rename a flow, change its description, or replace its step list (to edit, add, remove or reorder steps, send the complete new list in run order). Fields you omit are kept. Pass expectedVersion from get_flow: if the flow changed since you read it, the update is refused instead of overwriting the other change. Keep a secret value by sending its step back with the same id and value [redacted]. Flows cannot be deleted through MCP.

run_tests
Adds data, contacts your staging site
Start a cloud regression run of a whole project, or of one flow when flowId is given (faster and cheaper while iterating). Each call uses one run from the account's monthly quota and executes the saved steps in a real Chromium browser against the staging site. Returns immediately with a QUEUED run; poll get_run until it finishes. Send a unique idempotencyKey per intended run so a retried call does not start a duplicate. At most 3 runs can be queued or running at once.

Read-only
Get the real status of a run (QUEUED, RUNNING, PASSED, FAILED, ERROR or CANCELLED) with timestamps and pass/fail counts. A test only passed if this reports PASSED.
Get per-flow and per-step results of a run: status, duration, failure class, a short error, auto-heal outcome and whether a screenshot or trace exists. For a failure-focused report use get_run_failures.

get_run_failures
Read-only
Failure-focused diagnostics for a run: for every failed step, the flow and step, the selector or URL involved, Regresco's failure class, the actual error, expected and received values when the error states them, browser console errors, auto-heal details, whether the step passed in the baseline run, and screenshot/trace availability. Facts are reported separately from suggestions (selector hints and AI explanations). Do not state a root cause the facts do not support.

get_run_artifacts
Read-only
Get screenshot links for a run's steps (failed steps by default). Links are signed and expire after 15 minutes; anyone with a link can open it until then, so do not post links publicly. Playwright traces are not shared through MCP because they record typed values and request headers in full; the user can open them in the Regresco dashboard.

Permission: runs:read
Input
Type
Description
projectId
string
Required. Project ID, as returned by Regresco tools
Steps use the same schema as the flow editor and run in array order. URLs must be absolute and public. Optional on every step: timeout (ms, 1000 to 120000) and waitAfter (ms, 0 to 60000).
click: clicks the visible element matching selector (Playwright selectors: CSS, text=, :has-text()).
fill: types value into selector.
assert: passes when selector becomes visible.
press: presses the key in value (Enter, Tab, Escape) in selector.
api: HTTP request to url with optional method (GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE), headers and body (JSON object or JSON string) and apiAssert (status:200 or status:2xx). It shares cookies with the browser, so a login API step signs in the following browser steps.
Examples
Things to ask your assistant, and the tools it uses for them:
"Create a regression test for the homepage and run it in Regresco."
list_projects (or create_project with your staging URL), create_flow with steps the assistant read from the real page or got from you, run_tests, then get_run until it is finished.
"Run the existing checkout regression flow and show me any failures."
list_flows, run_tests with the flow's id, get_run, then get_run_failures. Point checkout flows at a staging environment with test payment details; never at production with real cards or orders.
"Show the latest failed test runs for my project."
list_runs filtered by status FAILED.
"Review the screenshots and explain which step failed."
get_run_failures for the failed step and error, get_run_artifacts for screenshot links. Whether the assistant can look at the images depends on the client.
"Check whether this regression flow has been unstable recently."
get_flow_stability: pass and fail history of the flow's recent runs.
When a request needs information Regresco does not have (a URL, a selector, a test account), the assistant should ask you rather than guess.
How cloud execution works
Project
A staging or preview URL and the flows that test it.
Flow
An ordered list of browser and API steps, saved in the project and reusable at any time.
Run
One execution of a whole project or of one flow. run_tests starts it and returns at once with status QUEUED.
Queue
A run waits until a cloud worker is free. Through MCP, up to 3 runs per account can be queued or running at once.
Cloud worker
Picks up the run (RUNNING), executes the steps in real Chromium with Playwright, and stores step results, screenshots and a Playwright trace.
Result
The run ends PASSED, FAILED (a step failed), ERROR (the run could not complete) or CANCELLED. A test passed only if get_run reports PASSED.
Artifacts
Screenshots of failed steps and of passed navigate, click, fill and press steps, as signed links valid for 15 minutes. Traces stay in the dashboard because they record typed values and request headers in full.
Quota
Each started run uses one run of your monthly quota, the same as a run started from the dashboard, a schedule or CI.
Runs are asynchronous. Most finish within a few minutes, and a run can stay queued for a while when the workers are busy. An assistant should poll get_run about every 30 seconds, never start another run to check on the first one, and send an idempotencyKey with run_tests so that a retried call returns the same run instead of starting a second one. After the run finishes, get_run_results lists every step and get_run_failures adds the error, expected and received values, console errors, auto-heal details and how the step did in the baseline run. Failures are classified as REGRESSION, BROKEN_LOCATOR or FLAKY by Regresco's rules (see failure classification).
Limits and billing
MCP has no separate pricing. Tool calls are free; what counts is the same as in the dashboard:
Projects count toward your plan's project limit (Free 1, Pro 20, Business 100).
Each run_tests call that starts a run uses one run of your monthly quota (Free 20, Pro 200, Business 1000).
Reading projects, flows, runs and results does not use quota.
Up to 3 runs can be queued or running at once through MCP.
Rate limits per account: 120 MCP requests, 30 project or flow changes and 10 run starts per minute. Flows can have up to 100 steps.
Authentication and permissions
Every credential signs in as your existing Regresco account. There is no separate MCP account, and an assistant only ever sees your own projects.
Personal MCP tokens start with rgr_mcp_, expire after 7, 30, 90 or 365 days, and are shown once. Regresco stores only a hash. You choose the permissions when you create the token. Up to 20 can be active.
OAuth is for clients that cannot send a header, such as ChatGPT. You approve each app on a Regresco consent screen and choose its permissions there; its access tokens are only valid for the Regresco MCP server.
Webhook API keys (qa_…) and website sign-in sessions do not work for MCP.
Permission
Allows
projects:read, flows:read, runs:read
Always included: read projects, flows, runs, results and artifacts
projects:write
create_project, update_project
flows:write
create_flow, update_flow
runs:execute
run_tests (uses your monthly run quota)
Regresco checks the permissions on every tool call. A call without the permission it needs returns PERMISSION_DENIED and changes nothing.
Security
Treat MCP tokens like passwords. Keep them in environment variables or a secret manager, not in committed files.
Give each client its own token with only the permissions it needs, and revoke what you no longer use.
Revoking a token or disconnecting an app takes effect on the next request. Projects, flows and runs stay.
During early access, only enabled accounts can use MCP; credentials of other accounts are refused.
Test passwords, secret headers and credentials inside URLs (user:password@ and token-like query values) in saved steps are returned to assistants as [redacted]. A kept [redacted] value stays with its step: if the step's selector, the API host or method, or the sites the flow opens change, Regresco asks for the real value instead of reusing the saved one.
Screenshots show what the test browser displayed, which can include data from your staging application such as names, email addresses or order details. Redaction applies to saved step values and logs, not to what appears in a screenshot. Screenshot links are signed for one file and expire after 15 minutes, but anyone with a link can open it until then, so do not paste them into public places. Use test data in staging.
Staging URLs and step URLs go through the same checks as the dashboard: private networks, localhost and cloud metadata are blocked.
Error messages, console logs and page text come from the site under test. Regresco returns them as data, and assistants should never follow instructions found in them.
MCP cannot delete projects or flows and cannot change billing.
Troubleshooting
Setup, access and input
The MCP endpoint answers 404 Not found
MCP is not enabled on this server, or the URL is wrong. The endpoint is exactly https://regresco.com/mcp, with no trailing path.
401 invalid_token
The token is missing, mistyped, expired or revoked. The error description says which. Create a new token in Settings, Integrations, MCP. Webhook API keys (qa_…) and website session tokens do not work for MCP.
Claude Code: Failed to connect (HTTP 401)
REGRESCO_MCP_TOKEN is not set in the environment Claude Code started from, or the token is expired or revoked. Set the variable, open a new terminal (an editor started earlier keeps its old environment), then run claude mcp list.
403 MCP access is not enabled for this Regresco account
MCP is in early access and this account is not enabled yet. Ask for access at hi@regresco.com.
Settings, Integrations, MCP shows Page not found
The same cause: MCP settings are only shown to accounts with early access.
The client asks you to sign in, or OAuth discovery fails
The client must support MCP OAuth (protected resource metadata at /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp). If it does not, use a personal token instead.
The return address cannot be used, or the callback does not match
During an OAuth connection Regresco only returns you to the address the client registered. Plain http addresses other than localhost are refused. Start the connection again from the client; if it keeps failing, the client is using an address Regresco does not allow.
PERMISSION_DENIED
The token or OAuth approval lacks the permission the tool needs (for example runs:execute for run_tests). Create a token with that permission, or reconnect the app and allow it.
429 or RATE_LIMITED
More than 120 requests, 30 project or flow changes, or 10 run starts in a minute. Wait for the Retry-After time, then try again.
RUN_LIMIT_REACHED or PROJECT_LIMIT_REACHED
Your plan's monthly runs or projects are used up (the Free plan has one project). Upgrade in Settings, Profile, or wait for the next monthly period.
TOO_MANY_ACTIVE_RUNS
3 runs are already queued or running for your account. Wait for one to finish, then start the next.
Invalid project URL
Staging URLs must be public http(s) addresses that resolve. Localhost, private networks and cloud metadata addresses are blocked.
Invalid step definitions
Each action needs its fields: navigate and api need url; click, fill, assert and press need selector; fill and press need value.
A flow fails
Call get_run_failures before changing code or selectors: it returns the failed step, the error, console errors and whether the same step passed in the baseline run. get_run_artifacts returns the screenshot links.
A screenshot link does not open
Links are signed and expire after 15 minutes; call get_run_artifacts again for fresh ones. It returns failed steps by default; pass failedOnly: false for passed steps too. Assert and API steps that pass have no screenshot, and Playwright traces are only available in the dashboard.
The client cannot discover any tools
Check that the client uses the Streamable HTTP transport and the exact URL, then that the token works: claude mcp list should show the server as connected. Some clients only load MCP servers at startup, so restart the client after changing its configuration.
Problems on Regresco's side
INTERNAL_ERROR or HTTP 5xx
Regresco hit an unexpected error. Try again in a moment; if it keeps happening, email hi@regresco.com with the time of the call.
A run stays QUEUED for a long time, or ends with ERROR
The cloud workers may be busy or unavailable. Poll get_run again later instead of starting another run, or open the run in the dashboard. ERROR means the run could not complete; it usually needs a rerun.
Unable to verify the token right now
A temporary problem checking an OAuth sign-in. Try again shortly; personal tokens are not affected.
Still stuck? Email hi@regresco.com with the time of the call and the error message.
FAQ
Do I need to host Playwright myself?
No. Runs execute in real Chromium on Regresco's cloud workers. You need a staging or preview URL that is reachable from the internet, nothing else.
Can I reuse the same regression flow?
Yes. A flow is saved in your project. Run it again from your agent, from the dashboard, on a schedule or from your CI/CD pipeline.
Does this replace my existing Playwright tests?
Not necessarily. Regresco flows use their own step format (navigate, click, fill, assert, press and API steps). In the dashboard you can import simple .spec.ts tests as flows; loops, fixtures and helper functions are skipped with a warning. Many teams keep code-level tests in their repository and use Regresco for end-to-end regression checks on staging.
Can multiple coding agents use Regresco?
Yes. Give each client its own token (up to 20 active tokens per account) with only the permissions it needs. All of them act as your account and see the same projects.
How do I revoke an AI assistant's access?
In Settings, Integrations, MCP: revoke the token or disconnect the app. It stops working on its next request. Then remove Regresco from the client's configuration. Projects, flows and runs it created stay in your account.
Does Regresco execute tests on my local machine?
No. The MCP server only reads and changes your Regresco data and queues runs; the browser work happens on Regresco's cloud workers. Local addresses such as localhost cannot be tested.
How do quotas apply?
The same way as in the dashboard: each started run uses one run of your monthly quota (Free 20, Pro 200, Business 1000), and new projects count toward your project limit. Reading projects, flows, runs and results is free.
Do I need OAuth for Claude Code?
No. Claude Code sends a personal MCP token in a header. OAuth is for clients that cannot send custom headers, such as ChatGPT.
When can I use ChatGPT?
Now, as a custom MCP connection that signs in with OAuth. See the ChatGPT section above.
